I read a brief article on Vanity Fair this morning about how AOC could have the biggest influence on policy heading into the nomination process because everyone will be fighting for her endorsement while knowing she won’t compromise.
It’s been fascinating to watch her in the past month. She totally strikes fear in the Republican Party. She is so good at articulating her positions that being young and beautiful is secondary to her being a brilliant and energizing force.

My stomach was turning with deja vu the other night talking to a bunch of center right military types, all of whom hate the Trump administration. The consensus was that Warren (due to blatant societal misogyny of course) was “unlikable” and unelectable, and would be easily defeated in 2020 is she ends up getting the nomination.
I maintain Beto will win in a landslide cause he’s a handsome, stately dude, and the American public is a sucker for that shit.

And it’s just wonderful watching her steal media attention from the dipshit potus.

I love that the professional pundit class still can't grapple with the fact that Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez are popular because they are proposing a bold agenda and not because of personality/charisma/looks/etc.

I don't understand why everyone is so pessimistic. He is already the President so it can't get worse. There is more ideological diversity and enthusiasm within the Democratic Party than at any other point in my lifetime. I have important disagreements with both Warren and Gabbard, for example, but I am excited they are running. And as far as milquetoast centrists go, I think it gets a lot worse than Beto, Harris, and Booker as well. The Party is shifting leftwards on important issues like healthcare, campaign financing, progressive taxation and the repeal of the Bush-era tax cuts, and climate policy.
Two of the most popular politicians in the country are outspoken proponents of democratic socialism. 2020 is going to fucking rip you fucking loser(s)!

I already heard someone on a call in show with a "What do we do if the DNC superdelegates overrule a 48/48 Sanders/Warren tie and hand the nomination over to Joe Biden?" question. To his credit the host told him he was about 4 hypotheticals too far down the road to take seriously.

Re: THE 2020 US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Also, we're already seeing signs that the media is desperate to portray any Democratic field over 7 candidates as 'proof' that the party is dysfunctional vs. 2016 Republicans awe-inspiring "deep bench (and, LOL Donald Trump)" of 17.

I've heard his age come up and I'm guessing there's still some soreness over 2016. I'm more at a loss explaining Warren's loss of popularity.

My guess on Warren is that it’s mostly because of that harmless DNA test crap. And like, because she’s a woman over 50.
But this person is somehow still allowed to exist:
Fucking gross.

It's like circa 2008 Montana became president.

Pretty much.
The former certainly helped nothing and the latter is no doubt central. Still weird to me.

People aren't as enthusiastic about Bernie anymore because:
1. Democrats are wary of retreads
2. He's old
3. Other candidates have co-opted his progressive message
He's still very good, but he isn't way ahead of the curve anymore.
I'm not sure Warren was ever popular as a national, electoral figure. She has the older woman thing working against her for sure. I would also say she's not traditionally charismatic. She's wonky and professorial. She lacks a standout trait, like Obama's oratory skills and casual cool, that transcends her personal awkwardness. Women are especially harshly judged on those terms.
I think she's the best Democrat on policy/track record by a significant margin, but I don't see her breaking through the field in this "shiny object" political media culture.

Re: THE 2020 US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
I kinda want her on the ticket but not at the top.
A year and a half from now this post is still gonna be on page 1 of this thread and it's probably gonna even worse than it does now but for reasons I can't even imagine at this time.

There seemed to be some excitement around her, particularly when Clinton was shopping for a running mate, but maybe there was never actual data suggesting she was popular, just an assumption based on vocal outliers.

Re: THE 2020 US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Even if I disagree with her, I think it is healthy to have someone who questions the bipartisan consensus on American foreign policy. I don't want her to win and am not invested in her campaign, but I am not offended by her either. She's a helluva lot better than conservative Democrats like Joe Manchin and Hillary Clinton.chrondog wrote:WP64 wrote:Gabbard,...but I am excited they are running.

Re: THE 2020 US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
I don't think there's anything healthy about having 20 different people run for a party's presidential nomination. I also don't think a veteran is the person that's going to shake up the foreign policy status quo.
I take the point about ideological diversity being healthy, it just doesn't do anything for me personally. I'm all about moving that Overton Window, baby.

This blanket statement strikes me as a bit wrongheaded.
Edit: I mean... even if it’s probably correct about that particular veteran.
