Totally forgot about the “Primitive Radio Gods” “standing in a broken phone booth” lmao
Man I love the 90s. Honestly so much music, a lot of it so silly or vaguely emotional on an innocent level.

can't stop thinking about the embittered lounge musician, decades later, still grinding that axe via wiki edits
Wikipedia wrote:In 1995, the band recorded the soundtrack to the film Four Rooms, produced by Mark Mothersbaugh. "Vertigogo", the film's main theme, was submitted for consideration for an Academy Award, but was ultimately disqualified from consideration because of its incomprehensible lyrical content, despite the fact that the band submitted a lyric sheet with their best written approximation of the lyrics.

I am 100% certain I paid $17 for the Jamiroquai full length CD just so I could have that song. But you could probably swap out that band name with about 30 others and it’s the same 90s story for me.

That song, recorded in my spare bedroom in a small semi-detached house on Silverburn Drive, Oakwood, Derby, went on to sell 400,000+ singles in the UK and a shitload in the rest of the world too. Although the album it was from, ‘Women In Technology,’ only sold 47,000 in the UK, it went on to sell 250,000+ in the USA and Canada.

Re: 90$ music
Yeah, the Hot 100 is messed up through most of the '90s because labels would forgo issuing a single to drive more profitable album sales.

Re: 90$ music
I've always been really curious to learn more about that sort of thing.
Because my lived experience of what culture was like back then is rarely reflected in the story the charts tell when I read them years after the fact.
And I do realize that my lived experience experience was, in countless ways, a bubble that excluded a lot of media/art that I was never fully exposed to, but also a lot of super popular stuff that I rejected because I wasn't the target audience for it, etc.
But I also know I was part of a huge demographic and it's always seemed weird to me that these charts have kind of erased it from the metrics of history, reducing songs that I knew were huge to minor concerns with zero cultural impact.
It will be difficult to couch this in any terms that won't get construed as complaining that (many) white artists just didn't get a fair shake

I can’t wrap my head around Virtual Insanity not cracking the top 100. I’d believe it if you told me it wasn’t #1, but yikes I completely misremembered the 90$

Huh. See, I remember it distinctly being a minor hit. Was kinda gobsmacked when it won best video at the VMAs that year. I dunno.

Looooooved Domino back in the days. I got VERY upset when Nelly came out people were like "He's putting St. Louis on the map" like everyone wasn't bouncing to "Sweet Potato Pie" all of '94.

I've only recently realized the extent to which I have been living in a very weird bubble for quite some time.

Re: 90$ music
Yeah, and at the time I was only really experiencing music from the radio and MTV/VH1/BET, so I was missing out on what was REALLY going on, man.

Yeah, this dude doesn’t get enough credit. Sweet potato pie is on my thanksgiving playlist, it’s a family tradition in our house.Duff... wrote:Looooooved Domino back in the days. Dude
I bet my aunt Coleen has this on a playlist titled “90$ Music” and on the playlist, cribbed from my cousin’s 2003 limewire downloads, it’s attributed to Beck.

Re: 90$ music
This song will pretty frequently pop into my head out of the blue.
It hasn’t aged a day.
I wonder what ever happened to this person.
