Sorry there was just way too much in that post and not all of it has anything to do with Lollapaolzaza

I feel like there was always this disinclination to look back too hard? Like it was customary to give props to the forebears from time to time but it was always about some new young punks wanting to do things their way and it had this kinda constant renewal thing. I like the turn to the emotional these days, if I don't like every song, and certainly like more women are getting heard.
Eh, it's competing with Post Malone, Chain Smokers, and Maroon 5, so I can't nearly agree. Definitely an underwhelming listening experience.undo wrote:

But yeah, we're getting old, and things are marching on without us. Soon we'll be like the old guys still pining for the old jazz days, and I guess that's fine.

undo wrote:I just have this creeping feeling sometimes like the whole idea we have of society holding a shared culture (or a shared culture holding up society), and art and music being a big and meaningful part of that...was built on premises that have been totally exhausted and are about to collapse or something.
It's also really convenient to be able to look backward and see how big changes in music and culture--punk, hip-hop, dance music--all make sense in the narrative of history that we can easily understand today, but were weird and different and in ways that we can never experience now.
Respecting the culture and the history was more important to hip-hop than any other music! I internalized the idea at some point, I don't know, go ahead and laugh I don't care. I don't feel like most listeners or artists today care about any rap made before the 2000s. I
This is why I feel like the end of culture is upon us. Participation in what's to come will not look or feel like anything we can wrap our minds around at this time, just like the culture we enjoyed, you have to be born into it.
Very thoughtful posting, Undo! I edited your post down to the parts I identify with the most.
The "monoculture" has been over for some time and now we're all living in digital subcultures that are completely floating. I'm experiencing "Jasper culture" in my head and no one else is. I particularly like the idea that people of the future are going to have a nightmare trying to draw a narrative line through any of the popular culture of this era.
I don't necessarily share the moral judgement you might have about whether this is a good or bad thing, but I think it's fun to talk about.
And your point about hip-hop being a culture that reveres history: that's why I'm always posting about how hip-hop and rap are two totally different things. We gotta leave "hip-hop culture" in the past so that we can remember it fondly and bang our Pete Rock beats in peace without figuring out how Travis Scott is influenced by CL Smooth.
This is an interesting look at the stupid posturing between the old and the new school in rap: https://www.xxlmag.com/news/2018/03/soundcloud-rappers-disrespecting-tupac-shakur-the-notorious-b-i-g/

Re: "the concert industry"
I was also flipping through this bathroom book in a store the other day, kind of a Pitchfork culture-informed primer on "artists that matter" from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 2010s.

I wish I could find a picture of the table of contents because the 2010s section--aside from Kendrick Lamar, Janelle Monáe maybe Death Grips but I don't really remember--was devastatingly dull, like if you thought the author was trolling I wouldn't blame you. The thing is I couldn't even think of who they should have included instead. This decade has not produced anything but an endless stream of extremely niche performers. Perhaps everyone knows this and it just dawned on me over the past week! And perhaps it's fine but it really feels weird.
edit: okay here it is

Shit, cat. I'd be fine with being one of those guys but I have a feeling I won't be 1/10th as cool.

I saw a billboard for this that had a pizza-themed pun on it like, "hey Chicago, have a deep dish slice of Deutsche ".

Spent some time today wondering when live shows will come back, what kind of attendance or added safety measures are going to be put in place and for how long that could last.
But also imagining what a release seeing live music again will be.

The Riot Fest lineup for September includes Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins & Faith No More. I feel like teenage me is insisting Oldster Me attend this and have a great time.

Re: "the concert industry"
Is anyone going to concerts this year?
I was excited to but now I just don't know, and I don't even know why I feel that way because I don't even know what I believe about reality any longer and I might need a few years to get used to this
In other words, maybe I can safely resume my embarrassing hyperextended adolescence of a life when I'm 50 or something

I was certain that I’d be going to concerts this year but have decided I don’t quite feel ready for that yet. I’ve penciled in March of 2022 as my return. Probably try crowd surfing at Deafheaven, lol.

Re: "the concert industry"
I watched Tyler the Creators set on Saturday with my son. Honestly, I have never listened to Tyler. I gave up on rap for the most part around the time he started getting popular so I never gave him a chance. With that being said his set was amazing. I couldn’t help but look up at my Ziggy Stardust poster and think of how proud he’d be of Tyler. When he put on his Igor uniform and started doing his diva dance moves I knew the comparison was a good one. This ones real guys. He knows what he’s doing.

I went to the Igor tour and it was excellent despite the crowd of teenagers.
New tour was just announced. Ill probably go again.
