I remember a very minor news story from about one to three years ago where two or three guys tried to tear down the Christopher Columbus statue in Chicago. They did not succeed. One of them was "caught" by a random passerby (?) and held in place until police arrived to arrest him.

This has haunted me ever since I read it as this did not happen during any larger discussion in society that would have energized the kind of right wing status quo defensive attitude that could potentially motivate a person like that to go above and beyond to protect a statue/physically detain another human being (using means that were never made clear in the reporting of the incident). Someone just decided they were going to stop this and they actually succeeded and saw to it that at least one of the perpetrators was punished!

I'm just as bothered by how the other person/people escaped and just left their friend to be detained by a single person (?) and eventually arrested. Maybe there's more to the story that I never heard about but what cowardice!

Can anyone help me find this? All my searches for it bring up much more recent news about the Columbus statues.

Like... I'm a government employee, about to work at the pentagon. If Trump is reelected, how many years do we have? It is early 30s Germany and if we keep following this path, at some point I either need to acquiesce to the Nazis or defect. Do you guys think we have at least three years left before it's irreversible? I'll probably roll the dice, go onto my DC job, and hope for the best. After that, I'll hopefully get sent back to Europe and just never return to the states if the nazis have seized power forever.

I'm listening to the Arcade Fire song "The Suburbs," and I really like it.

I'm sure I probably put them on the list of my favorite SOMB 2007 albums because I saw the pfork review and listened to them once and was like "yeah, this sounds like good music," but I haven't thought twice about them since.

Believe it or not, I never really have. I “like” everything I’ve ever heard from them but little of it really ever stuck with me at all. That’s the extent of anything meaningful I have to say about them (nothing).

Some Girl turned me on to 23 which is a pretty good record. I imagine your life would be fine if you skipped it though.

Remembering that I used to listen to that a ton while playing Metroid Prime, worked about perfect for that.

When I was a young person and I drove a convertible in California, one time I turned on that album while driving at night with the top down and the chick I was trying to impress was impressed and we ended up fooling around a bit. She had a fun piercing and that’s the only time I’ve seen one of those types of piercings up close and not in like a porno or whatever.

FWIW I always preferred The Arcade Fire as a singles band.
