Wikipedia wrote:Magic and Loss was voted the 16th best album of the year in The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics poll for 1992. Robert Christgau, the poll's creator, disapproved of the voters' support of an album he felt was a "failed concept" marred by Reed's uninteresting views on death.[19] Christgau gave it a "neither" grade in his own review, indicating an album that does not warrant repeated listening despite coherent craft and one or two highlights.[20] In a positive review, Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune said that the album shows "a great rocker at the peak of his powers: Striking tunes, gripping lyrics, honest emotion stripped of melodrama."[11]

Man Christgau is such an asshole.

I have been in a pretty deep Velvet Underground / Lou Reed tunnel as well. He has a strange magic where even the most depressing subject matter feels a little redemptive or something. Hope for the best emotional outcome one can have during time like this for you, Reuben.

whenever a song by an obscure artist has many more plays online than you'd expect, you can bet it is in a weird trailer or TV show somewhere

i noticed "Heron Blue" by Sun Kil Moon has lots of plays on YouTube and Spotify, and that's because it was in a Gears of War trailer once

similarly, "If I Had a Heart" by Fever Ray has almost 24 million plays on Spotify because it's the intro song for History Channel's terrible show Vikings

i think this song is super good and i've been playing it a lot over the past few days. i'm really glad i didn't know "the story" of this album before i heard the song.

it has caused me to revisit a bunch of AnCo and Panda solo as well. i think i'm going to dive into Panda's 2015 record soon. Merriweather Post Pavilion sounds super weird today. still very good and interesting, but not "essential" or "timeless" in the way that it was analyzed at the time.

i also discovered this, which i can't remember if i'd ever heard of before:

weird weird stuff, but also good.

so i guess this song is pretty well known huh?

i don't know shit about Bjork or Sugarcubes, but this came up on a shuffle for me a few weeks ago and i keep returning to it. Bjork's vocal performance fucking blew me away.

    it's wonderful.

I don't believe I've ever heard this particular Sugarcubes song but Björk is an impressive vocalist, yeah.

I forgot how good this band was.

I don't think they ever broke up but I don't think they've done anything for 5 years either.
