I was at a birthday party last weekend & ended up talking about music with my brother-in-law. I’d never discussed this topic much with him before but it turns out he’s a major prog rock fan.

I mentioned I’ve only listened to a few King Crimson albums & Pink Floyd. My impression was that he was not thrilled about me considering Floyd as prog.

He went on to basically say Jethro Tull is the greatest band of all time & until today I’ve never listened to their music.

I’m listening to Aqualung & having a hard time understanding what is so great.

You are not alone in wondering this.

Busted out Jewelery early this week and I’ve listened to it everyday. Also wondered what they had done lately and listened to their album from 2015... that one is not so good. Unfortunate because their sound and her lyrics were really unique at the time.

Oh yeah... Liked Jewelery at the time but pretty sure I haven't listened to it since. A Garreth Keenan Investigates! recommendation if I recall correctly.

I have a (first) cousin (once-removed) who's like 60+ years old. Big prog guy. He explained to me, in 2016, that "Tull" is so great because, you see, the one motherfucker plays the flute...while standing on one leg.

I’m listening to 1977 by Ash while I play Tetris on my NES. It is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Did you mute all sound on the TV or are you just playing with the game music turned off?

Had to poz that cause, oddly enough, I thought a lot about that before I made the decision to leave the sound on and use the “music off” option. Felt like I really needed to hear those blocks dropping, but wasn’t ready for a cacophonous suite of 90s rock meets Russian ballet music

I think that Nina Simone has received a similar treatment to James Baldwin in the last five years or so. Both were criminally underappreciated and they have benefited from a critical reappraisal of literary/musical canons that is trying to de-center white male audiences and artists. All that said, I've actually had a difficult time getting really into Nina Simone. I've had similar problems with Aretha Franklin actually. I'd never been able to settle into an album length work of theirs. This was the first album that really connected with me. It's absolutely perfect front-to-back. There are a few standout tracks like "Four Women," "Lilac Wine," and Nina's absolutely incredible version of "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair." But it just carries a wonderfully melancholic tone throughout the whole album.

I am listening to "Sparkle and Fade" right now and I am loving it. I get that I'm sort of an idiot for being into this sort of nonsense, but it reminds me of driving to baseball games in my buddy Steve's (his band is better than Everclear ftr) toyota and I haven't gotten to the dumbest songs yet. Nostalgia rules my brain and this is amazing.

I’ve been going through Lou Reed’s catalogue the past month. Holy hell I forgot how many clunkers he’s released.

And yet, I don’t recall enjoying Legendary Hearts or New Sensations and it’s been years since I’ve listened but they sound great this time around.

Don't really know where to post this. I've been trying to find this album that Bruegel really liked from probably 2012-13... It's a techno album and there is a track called "falling forwards" or maybe "falling backwards" or something like that right in the middle of the album. It's more than one person... Can anyone help me with this? My mind is gone (and so is my old iTunes library).

Don’t know if this was it or not but it does sound like the guy is saying falling (he’s actually saying balling) and it’s from around the time period

Those aren't it unfortunately, but thanks for the effort. I think I am probably throwing you off with the falling backwards thing. I just remember it was like an hour long techno album (I think it was a duo) and in the middle there was a track where the entire album kind of transformed in a really beautiful way. They were a pretty big deal in the world of esoteric dance music too..

No but that's an excellent shout. I had completely forgotten about that album. I finally found what I was talking about:

I was wrong about the year and I also forgot that it was a Regis-related project. My memory is shit. It's a great album though.

    I love Sandwell Diatrict

Waves Within was huge on Voices From the Lake so I approached it with a lot of skepticism and never got why on earth there was actual hype around the album (this also happened with that Nicolas Jarr album and I never got what in earth it was all about). Listened to VotL today while getting a vasectomy and it's really nice music to get lost in, I am humbled it's great

I hated this band when I was a kid. Now their turgid Wall Of Shit jams just get to me and I can't help it, it's the weirdest thing.

New song in John Wick Chapter 3 is more of the same and I love it
