I don’t think I have it in me to sit through a long Kanye album at this point.

Undo and JJ, thanks for the rec and the big up on that Sam Grendel Sam Wilkes joint. I like both albums as a piece. Ive listen to the first then the second for every drive home the last few drives. Excellent stuff. Deserves a drop in the downtempo thread.

Well, I found it in me to listen to Donda and have to admit it is not that bad. It’s close to 2 hours so there are a lot of plateaus but some of the songs are terrific.
I have not listened to much hip hop this year. The Bug album has been getting several repeat listens from me so my enjoyment of Donda is either weird nostalgia for Old Kanye, having no idea what good hip hop is in ‘21 or maybe Donda is getting undeservedly panned because of Kanye’s support for Trump.

I think there’s going to be a new Maxo Kream album in 2021. Got turned onto that guy somewhat recently, and love his stuff.

Re: 2021 musical recordings
if we're talking good 2021 rap then Sometimes I Might Be Introvert by Little Simz is phenomenal. new Dave is probably great as well, PSYChODRAMA is my favourite UK hip-hop album, but I haven't heard it yet

Re: 2021 musical recordings
This is fantastic. I was waiting for my son to get out of his club while watching people walk by and this was very calming. I felt happy to be alive. The last few tracks in particular are beautiful. I don’t know why this music touches my soul the way it does but lately jazz has been the only thing I want. Especially this newer ambient jazz strain that mixes beats from hip hop, IDM, and other similar genres with hushed jazz melodies.
Couldn’t see track list last night but the ‘last few songs’ is actually just one long piece titled Space 8.

Re: 2021 musical recordings
Stunning music, BG. Thank you.
I have also enjoyed a number or jazz fusion albums in the past few years. People are doing some really inventive things with the form.
On this album there's pianos, synths, harps, and samples. Some tracks are more soft and spacey, others more avant garde and anxious. It's a rich, warm journey.

So Modest Mouse recorded what may as well be a U2 song and I'm kind of into it?

Admittedly I've not listened to much but that Billie Eilish record might currently be my favorite. "Oxytocin" is my jam.
That Halsey song reminds me of Fever Ray.

I heard it on the radio and was like "what the hell is this?" Turns out she had Trent Reznor produce her album.

Ah, that makes sense. When her (their?) last record came out I was expecting it to be the top 40 record I was gonna get into. Didn't pan out and Dua Lipa walked into my life, but this has got my interest again.

My 74 year old dad loves Halsey. Admittedly, his musical tastes are much different than your average 74 year old.

Re: 2021 musical recordings
I was in the backseat of my parents new-ish car tonight, I think it was a Honda Pilot??? No music was playing but the center console had a big display reading
Track 5
RAISED BY WOLVES
U2
and it was just on there and never changed for most of the ride, and I'm trying to understand just what's going on there

Re: 2021 musical recordings
Raised by Wolves was one of the songs on the "free U2 album that got put on everyone's iPod", so most likely your parents car is connected to Apple CarPlay or something and that's the song it was able to access.

The Songs of Innocence product launch is approved. The system goes on-line September 9th, 2014. Human decisions are removed from U2 album downloading. Songs of Innocence begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, October 4th. In a panic, Tim Cook tries to pull the plug.

Re: 2021 musical recordings
If you’re looking for a jam band fix you could give Tonstartssbandht - Petunia a listen. “Using little more than a 12-string guitar and a drum kit, Andy and Edwin weave together the gentle heaviness of Laurel Canyon and the sweaty pacing of Cologne…” from their bandcamp page. It’s pretty, harmonic, and doesn’t go too long with any jam. Surprisingly the spare instrumentation sounds richer than you might expect and the vocal melodies recall csny. If any of that sounds like what you want, click the link!
