Re: Now Playing
Been so fucking depressed about this Gira story that all I have listened to on a loop for the past two days is Talk Talk and Miles' In a Silent Way.

Re: Now Playing
been listening to this album for days. I remember people talking about Beyond Living a lot, or maybe just Paves, but this one seems to have gone unacknowledged by everyone
rules front to back, better than the Men or Yuck or whoever else is doing Meat Puppets/Dino Jr. worship shit like this (which is an easy description but not really fair, there's more heart to it than that)

I loved the shit out of Beyond Living, but I thought that the LP was pretty disappointing.

When you put it like this, then yeah, it probably seems way more remarkable. Bands like that are why I wasn't listening to much new rock music at the time.
Beyond Living just came across as incredibly strong to me (sound, vocal melodies, concept, etc.) with a ton of urgency, whereas my one listen to the followup struck me as sounding rushed and sloppy with some newish guitar ideas. I'm sure a revisit would have me appreciating it more on its own terms now.
I remember another Pacific Northwest band called Gun Outfit doing a similar thing on their first album that I heard once. They had the sound down, anyway. I recall getting really bored after one song but they're surely better than those other bands you named.

^ lol
it's definitely not as focused as Beyond Living but it doesn't come across as lazy or sloppy or less urgent to me, just progressing into something more expansive and less rigid but still built around great riffs. vocal melodies are as good as ever imhfo. i hope they make the double album they're talking about

Re: Now Playing
I didn't know about that, or even that they were still doing anything. Tried searching for recent info the other day and just got links from 2013.
More than likely gonna jam this shit soon as I've been listening to a shitload of early Hüsker Dü, later Wipers, and Dinosaur.

Re: Now Playing
I was about to say that I can't imagine ever wanting to listen to Husker Du again, but remembered that I played a few sides of Warehouse a month or two ago. It was better than I thought it would be. I guess I've always been confused about the appeal of these band, because I preferred Grant's songs to Bob's and thought they got better as they went on. Maybe because Grant had more songs.

By the way, I purchased my copy of Warehouse the week it came out at a record store in Woodfield Mall.

Re: Now Playing
I always liked songs here and there and thought Zen Arcade was a neat record. That's the one of theirs I kept when I was getting rid of LPs, since I looked at my copies of New Day Rising and Warehouse and failed to imagine such college rock twaddle being of use to me in the near future. Which sucks because Warehouse was an original, and used or new they're way more expensive now. I'd listen to either today.
I guess over the years I never grasped their "importance" or connected with their sound much, but getting into the early records has made all that more obvious, and the shitty, flat production that people complain about isn't a hindrance at all.
The appeal is just that they were a really fucking good band and the guitarwork is awesome (I actually recall a Milk Music interview mentioning that they wanted to play fast but have "cool guitar parts like Hüsker Dü.") They're just pummeling and crazy on Land Speed Record, which is easily one of the more satisfying hardcore documents by my estimation. And "Data Control" rules especially hard. Then they get tighter, bringing in actual songs and shit while retaining the "screaming in your face" intensity. Zen Arcade strikes that balance in a whole bunch of interesting ways.
The rougher, older poppy songs are really cool, too, like "Diane," "Everything Falls Apart," "It's Not Funny Anymore," "Gravity."
In a lot of ways it's the same trajectory that the Meat Puppets had. The Puppets come across as more fun and funnier for reasons that are obvious to me. But that's less relevant since I've been just digging the Hüsker Dü sound and evolution thereof.
Shit, I'll do the Dü just about any danged day of the week!

Re: Now Playing
Played that Milk Music album again and enjoyed it, also. Now I'm almost not even sure if I listened to it all the way through in 2013.
The hotshot lead guitarist's contributions made me long for this, though:

Re: Now Playing
I would say so.
I'd definitely recommend Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren, Something/Anything?, A Wizard, A True Star, and Todd to anyone curious to find out what the big deal is.
More recently I've been into things after that run of albums like Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Initiation, and Healing, which is his best work, IMO.
In conclusion, if you like "good music," he certainly is "good."

From 1975 and sounds like lower-fi Funkadelic with a really loud synth.

Re: Now Playing
That description makes it sound like something totally up my alley... gonna have to check it out.
Haven't listened to all that much Rundgren, but what I've heard is all awesome. Cosign for sure.
At the moment it's sunny, I'm listening to Pet Sounds, and I'm getting ready to go outside.

Re: Now Playing
Released on the tiny Bamboo label between Edwin Birdsong's tenures with Polydor and Philadelphia International, Dance of Survival remains his boldest and most metaphysical effort, channeling influences spanning from psychedelia to folk to disco to create music that seems to speak an alien language only the ass can understand. No matter how eccentric or incomprehensible Birdsong's lyrics, his grooves are profoundly universal, the Trojan horse via which his music spreads like some mutant virus. This is cosmic funk transmitted from a planet astronomers have yet to discover, adorned in bizarre production flourishes, blistering guitars and sci-fi synths, and it's somehow both instantly familiar and utterly unlike anything you've ever heard.
