Re: Rap Songs of Interest
I hate that name, but that's a nice track.
I was listening to some old Raider Klan shit this morning. Most of it doesn't really hold up, but I don't understand why Amber London couldn't attract a more solid following. She put out a mixtape six years ago that absolutely bangs. I think she put out a few tracks after that but pretty much disappeared from my radar. Bummer. Her, Ugly Mane, and Denzel were the standouts of that generation of underground, triple six inspired hip-hop acts.

I also think it's dumb that none of you guys ever got behind Ugly Mane. All of today's emo rappers are just shittier derivations of this imo.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
Everything that's ever come out of Memphis is better than anything Raider Klan. It was intriguing to me for a little bit in 2010-11, but they rarely execute well.
Also, have you listened to something like Juice WRLD? It's nothing like that. There's a schism in emo rap between the "sad boy" underground aesthetic and the pop punk, Fall Out Boy esque emo rap a la Juice.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
There were several Memphis artists affiliated with Raider Klan though. I've never listened to Juice WRLD and pop punk definitely isn't my thing... I am pretty ignorant about most new rap honestly because it's basically all shit.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
Does anyone here like Jpegmafia or want to talk about Jpegmafia?
I've only heard Communist Slow Jams but holy shit.
I feel like this guy would be the artist of the moment and absolutely huge but he's saying shit that's going to make way too many people feel really uncomfortable, and while I'm far from being in any position to make anyone huge, that group of people absolutely includes me and it's a bizarre experience I haven't experienced in many years! This is also 4 years old now, I haven't checked out any of his newer stuff yet but I'm about to!
Like, I don't even know how to talk about this music without exposing as being totally out of my depth, how lame I suddenly feel discussing how "uncomfortable" I am with him using homophobic slurs in the way he does, while at the same time understanding where he's coming from and what he's trying to say here. I'm really willing to give him a pass--why is that? Am I a hypocrite? It's understandable when he calls someone a faggot and says a bunch of trans-phobic stuff, but it's not when Eminem does? I'm directing that question at myself and I don't have an answer.
Production and sampling on this is weird in the way I love most, at times reminds me a lot of clouddead, a group that white rap fans love to hate because they either feel it proves their realness or because they see too much of themselves in them and that makes them feel self-conscious (definitely never because they just don't like the music, trust me). There's a trippy Boards of Canada-like feeling to a few of the final tracks. Overall this album just kicks my ass.

I could be mistaken but I think the homophobic slurs are absent from his later work? (Not sure who I'm directing this question at, haven't heard that one). Anyway, yeah, I'm a fan. Veteran is great

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
This was one of my absolute favs from last year:
He's been doing recent work with Flume and other DJs which is interesting. He sticks to heavy rapping even over less "beat-y" music which is interesting. I agree there's something compelling about his POV and his intensity. I haven't spent tooooo much time with his music but I continually gravitate toward it.

Benny is incredible. I posted how much I like Griselda ft. DJ Premier "Headlines" right? Great song.
My friend is really into Freddie, I think he's solid. The video on the farm was silly. Good songs!

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
Seeing Madlib & Gibbs perform Piñata live before it was even released was probably the coolest concert I have ever been at. Madlib opened by DJing for like an hour and then Gibbs walked out and they went straight into "Scarface."
I wasn't expecting a follow up to that album, but they have a really cool relationship. Gibbs is one of the few mainstream rappers that really respects what Madlib has done throughout his career. On first listen, I was kind underwhelmed by the new album, but it's become my favorite of the year. I think the first few tracks are a little flat, but everything from "Crime Pays" on is fucking awesome. I'm especially into "Practice" and "Giannis."
Motherfuck Jeff Sessions, I am selling dope with a weapon!

I'm still slowly dipping my toes into European rap music. I am absolutely obsessed with everything that Niska does. His new single is great and hopefully he drops another album soon. Apparently his videos are blocked in the States so I am not sure if everyone can see that, but I am posting it anyway.
