Re: Thought Dump
I got recruited to wrestle in college. That was my best sport. Also pretty solid at baseball, football, cross country (actually way better now at this than I was back then). Played on the sprint football team at Navy for a couple years (football, but with a weight limit. So mostly full of excellent position players who were too small to play D1 and guys like me who were athletic enough to learn how to be 160 pound linemen).
Sometimes I miss the distraction, the camaraderie, all that jazz. Understanding of the fact that this whole world is a pretty bizarre thing for so many people to take seriously, but hey bread and circuses or whatevs.

Re: Thought Dump
The whole "lol, sportsball" thing has been an essential missing ingredient of this Nietszce reading cliché we're talking about, and I decidedly cared way too fucking much about sports when I was fifteen (which is not to say I was any good at them. At all.). Certainly every night I was watching Jordan score 30 points I could have been reading Sartre, but y'know.

Re: Thought Dump
I wish I'd spent more time playing and watching sports as a teenager. I would have been okayish at best at both of those endeavours, but yeah. Trying to read books that made me see clever and rarely getting through more than 100 pages can't have been a significantly better use of my time

Re: Thought Dump
I'm satisfied with having done a lot of all three of those things--reading, playing sports, and fanatically watching sports. Time largely well spent.

Agreed. But not in the past, in my current life. Caring about sports in the past is 50% of the reason I’m “successful.”

Re: Thought Dump
Caring about sports as a child caused me nothing but misery and pain. The class I grew up with (literally, we were fed from the same elementary school into the same middle school and high school, there was never a mixing-in of new kids from other schools like you normally get to stir things up) were ridiculously athletic and sports obsessed. There was no way to compete with these kids and how they were all groomed to do sports because that's just how it was. There was no plan B when this didn't work out.
Playing sports and watching sports are two different things, I'm glad I watched all those games with my family and friends, would have been awesome if I hadn't spent all that money on cards and shit but I have nothing but good memories from that.
Openly gay president, for sure.

Re: Thought Dump
Maugham once wrote something along the lines of “the only love that lasts is of the unrequited variety,” and I suspect that he was right. That said, if given the choice between miserable and poetic/beautiful or happy and uncertain/likely doomed, I’ll take the latter every time.
It’s been the worst month ever, and the only thing keeping me from drowning in my own head is this thesis I keep forcing myself to come back to.

Re: Thought Dump
I quite like this quote, and maybe there's some truth behind it in such that unrequited love is the only kind which doesn't settle into familiarity. It is the love of the unknown and desired which is the passionate kind, not the simple love of calm recognition.
I'm a believer that love is a chemical reaction, but damned if it isn't the sort that will fuck you up for months. I am still completely fucked emotionally from being 'ghosted' by the girl I moved to California for, but for some reason I'm looking for jobs here despite having no real friends nor any reason to stay other than a hope I know is futile that something will work out with her.
But at the same time it has driven me to art and at least I'll have something tangible to come of it. Stay tough Ned, life only gets easier when it looses its "big events" and I have a feeling a passionate guy like you could use a little bit of the chaos from time to time. Hopefully you get a little less in the near future.

Thanks for the solidarity and the kind words. I have too many things going on right now, and the fact that I’m also underwater with school...
Moving to location unknown

Money/debt problems
Depression

It’s an unhealthy cocktail, and I’ve tried and failed to fix it with cocktails. I will persevere, cause what else is there to do, right? Also, I’m hoping this government shutdown will buy me an extra day on the paper due tomorrow.
Did the Red Hot Chili Peppers have a song called jaberwocky? Cause it’s be a shame if they didn’t.

Re: Thought Dump
Is human achievement even a real possibility? Has any human ever “succeeded?”
And if no, why go on? My personal answer is that something beats nothing, even if that something is ultimately irrelevant. And also, my answer is that you will have nothing eternally, regardless... so might as well have some patience and take all of life, painful, bad, more painful, occasionally enjoyable, and bad. Cause... we all get to the void of nothingness soon enough so why rush it?
