Re: Now Playing
I’m a pretty big fan of Love Deluxe. That one probably belongs in the Downtempo thread. The first 4 albums are all great.

Re: Now Playing
Agree on that! Especially about the first 4. Stronger than Pride is my personal favorite, but I think they're all great in their own way. Lovers Rock also has some good songs but is a clear departure from the classic Sade sound everyone loved. Soldier of Love is probably best left mostly ignored.
The thing that jumpstarted my Sade obsession was finding a Love Deluxe CD for free in a box on the side of the road in Markleeville, CA. I was camping with my parents and sister a few years ago and grabbed the box while we were passing through town. It also had a copy of Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs which is another great record.

Promise? What do you think of the album cuts there? "Is It A Crime? might be my favorite Sade song and "Sweetest Taboo" is one of their best singles, but I think the overall mood of the album is tremendous. It's such a wonderful, melancholic album about love and relationships. "War of the Hearts", "You're Not the Man", "Mr Wrong", "Punch Drunk", "Fear", "Tar Baby" and "Maureen" are all lovely album tracks/mood pieces.
Love love Sade and this album.
Promise!
Literally my first spin. I'm with you with the sax, but the guitar I find mesmerizing. Sade's voice gets the attention, and deservedly so, but in the early days this was a hell of a band.

Re: Now Playing
Yes! They're great. An incredibly tight band with some great songwriters throughout.
Sade and guitar is an interesting thing. The use of guitar on a couple tracks here really helps break things up from the usual vibe. "The Sweetest Taboo" introduces it, but it also anchors songs like "Jezebel", and "Fear". Some of her classic ballads have great guitar. Lovers Rock took the whole band more in that direction, which is why it's a departure.
It also goes without saying that Sade bassist Paul Denman is truly exceptional.
I think my favorite Sade song with a lot of guitar is from the first album:
Over the past two years, Sade has become one of the things I'm most passionate about lol

I listened to a ton of HNIA in 2000-2001. The progression of their albums through the '90s is pretty interesting. If you listen to what they released in 1990 when they signed to 4AD, they sound like... a 1990 4AD band. They gradually drift out of the dreampop/artrock world and by 2000 are making R&B/soul records. I think this was an interesting and underrated trend among indie bands in the late '90s, basically wanting to interpret every different strain of '60s pop music.
I haven't listened to any of the last nine (??!?) albums HNIA has released, I should check them out...

Boris with Merzbow - Gensho
I’m listening to them separately but I guess this is like a Zaireeka thing where you play both artists LPs at the same time and they are supposed to sync. Based on some of the comments on the internet, it works really well. Alone the albums are both good in their own right. The Boris album is them doing some of their most beloved songs without a drummer. Basically sounds like SunnO))) but more shoegazey, they even cover MBV ‘sometimes’ which does not beat the original but is a pretty good cover nonetheless. The Merzbow stuff sounds like what you’d expect if you’re familiar with his work. Not as harsh as usual though, seems like some of the highs/mids have been shaved a bit which is easier on the ears. Thankfully my hearing has also gone a bit so all this noise stuff that usually used to make my ears hurt sounds muted these days. Recommended for those that need something heavy and weird for Sunday Morning.

Far from a “fuckin’ shit!” moment, but still totally hearing the influence in this lil ditty by Lily (I wonder where she is these days and I’m pretty sure she’s fine cause she’s a sharp kid) Allen:
Probably doesn’t require acknowledgment, but yeah, that Sade song is fire sex emoji.

Re: Now Playing
I showed my girlfriend the "LDN" video the other day because she had never heard of Lily Allen (aka Ms. David Harbour). I definitely felt some of the mid-late 80s London vibes that Sade has in her early music videos like:
So many of her videos are "slice of life" montages that stand as amazing time capsules in retrospect. I think it's possible the "LDN" video was inspired by Sade:

I’m doing much better. Despite two vaccines and a booster, it was actually a pretty rough couple days of sickness. Better after three much needed days of R&R.
I was definitely asking for it… went to four superspreader work events in the week leading up to the COVID, and pulled an all nighter finishing a paper after the third and before the fourth. Was feeling shitty that day and attributed it to sleep deprivation and exhaustion rather than actual sickness…
Thanks for asking.

Re: Now Playing
I’m listening to Janis Joplin - Get it while you can and I’m crying with joy at this beautiful woman and one of the best instruments of the 60s, her voice. Move Over in particular is an unleashing of the Holy Spirit. It’s sad cause in between songs she sounds super drunk… but then during a song she becomes the holy mother. Amazing performances. Worth checking out if you like gospel tinged blues and r&b with a voice so powerful, it’ll shake you.

Been really enjoying Faith No More the real thing.
Just been nostalgic and listening to early Metallica, FNM, and shit like Def Leppard. Why the fuck not, the world will be ending soon
