I bought this one last year. I see the vinyl every once in a while but $50 is a bit much. I’m guessing you’ve heard this one, how do they compare?

This is a really good compilation, basically these two albums back to back.
This is a juicy spot to sit for 80 minutes or so

The Marshall Staxx Journey to Tortilla Mountain album is pretty sick and I'm listening to it for the first time in a long time, and this is gonna make me revisit the post-Marshall Stacks project under the xnXXXis moniker, available on the Coolatta Lounge bandcamp page.

I would love to fight my younger self for all sorts of reasons but acting all high and mighty because I listened to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and not shit like this has got to be near the top of that list.

Purelink also released some stuff prior to Signs this year. I was surprised and felt lucky to have found a American seller that had it for less than €40 before shipping! It’s a 12” release so only 4 tracks but just as good as Signs. A bit more on the cosmic jungle tip and Maintain the Bliss is like the perfect chill out/after hours track. Worth your time.

I haven't heard this song in maybe 30 years and possibly haven't even thought of it in just as long.
And then within seconds, it all just comes flooding back. The human brain is crazy!

Re: Now Playing
Matmos is one of those groups that is constantly releasing material so I’m not always caught up with everything. This album from last year is one of their best in years. It’s based off of a Polish composers work so compositionally it’s different, but it still sounds completely like a Matmos album. I can’t really pin down why I like it more than some recent material, maybe the production is softer(?), not sure, but I’d recommend it. Again, it’s a matmos album, so if you don’t like them, I don’t know if this one will change your mind, but if you have an interest in experimental electroacoustic music it’s worth the 40ish minutes.

People Like Us - The Mirror
https://peoplelikeus-vickibennett.bandcamp.com/album/the-mirror
Having bought the entire catalog, it took me a while to find this gem but this may be the best People Like Us album next to Thermos Explorer. It’s extremely listenable! Pop songs and old film music ephemera swirl together in one of the most psychedelic experiences I’ve had in a while. Track 2 has a flip of Don Mclean and the velvet underground that has been stuck in my head all week. MY HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION.

Re: Now Playing
Listened to that People Like Us album. Great shit. Myriad of very well chosen samples and really good soundscapes that weirdly enough occasionally reminded me of some of the sounds my brother makes on his BdPhones stuff (although other than that, very different styles/vibes). Gonna keep grooving this in come coming days, thanks for the rec.

Re: Now Playing
Had an experience while cooking and listening to Grateful Dead - Dicks Picks, Vol 12. Starting around Spanish Jam this show turns quiet, introspective, and melty. I was stuck stirring my sauce for like 5 minutes at the end of Spanish Jam into Wharf Rat and cultish deadheads finally made full sense. The playing is textured, almost ASMR in its quiet picking. Give it a listen maybe during a moment when you don’t need to focus on the bad singing, cause bros, it’s legendarily bad.

Re: Now Playing
When a band goes 11 years without releasing anything new, it's probably a sign they're done for. But I always hoped there would be something still to come from these guys. Everything they did was so good and they went out on a high note.
Now reading that they've officially been finished for quite a while now. Not really a surprise but, damn, why trade this in for a life of making film soundtracks (and doing whatever the other guy is doing)? Such is the life of being an actual musician and not just some roadside gaper like me, I guess.

Re: Now Playing
I am on a Grateful Dead live odyssey right now. It’s interesting to see how their jamming changed as the 70s turned into the 80s. The word around town is that once Touch Of Grey becomes famous, their shows became something less. Partially because the crowds changed but also the years of hard touring were finally catching up to them. I listened to a show from 91 and the playing was fine but his voice sounded absolutely atrocious. While they were never a band of singers, his voice became better as the 70s went on. The addition of Godchaux as a back up vocalist also adds a nice counterpoint to Jerry in this era. But, yeah, by the 90s things were clearly going down hill. I’ll post good stuff that I think goes beyond what people expect out of the dead maybe later

Recommend me one really good Grateful Dead album or live show or even just a single song.
I like "jammy" music but I have yet to hear anything from them that's made me get what they're all about. I hear them and, well maybe it's for the best that I don't reveal what it reminds me of or how it makes me feel. They've just never clicked for me at all. I've also never put in any real effort into breaking past these impressions, but the idea that I really have to work to appreciate artists is feeling less and less appealing to me these days than ever.
And yet... I once started a really dumb thread on this board about Fleetwood Mac and I totally get them now in a way that I thought I never would, so these things still can happen.

Re: Now Playing
Honestly, my obsession this week has been Dicks Picks vol 12. The dicks picks sessions are nice because they are mostly, if not all, soundboard recordings, so they sound excellent for a ‘live’ recording. Also, with that said, I don’t enjoy the shorter ‘pop’ songs as much as the jamming. But with that said, sometimes they’ll jam on a pop song, like ‘turn on your love light’ and it can be either mesmerizing or horseshit noodling. If you end up listening to this live album, I’d start at track 7, The Other One. It begins a 7 track run of excellent jamming. Spanish Jam in particular is soft and warm. This stretch might warm you up to the rest of the album but be warned, they are kinda like a bar band sometimes. It’s not all good. But the best moments are worth it in my opinion.
I tried to post the full concert from YouTube but it wouldn’t let me, so here is Spanish Jam, if you like it I’d give the rest a go, you might like it

This is really good and it does not sound the work of the same band who recorded any of their shorter, studio-recorded tunes (of which I'll admit I've also barely scratched the surface of).
The repeating riff through the opening part of the song is definitely reminding me of some classic NES theme.
Many of this game's themes have done this to me over the years so it might just be me.
