listened to this on the way home this morning and it blew me away.
on the first play through i caught references to Ray Mancini, Livingstone Bramble, Bernard Hopkins, Tavoris Cloud and Keith Thurman, which warmed the cockles of my fight geek heart.
gotta say that this is some goddamn kooky talk if I ever saw it.
as satisfying as it is to hear koz backed by a (quite wonderful) full band for the first time in a while, that record is some lazy ass bullshit in more than a few places. I think we've far since reached the point of diminishing returns on the rambling tour travelogue-type song he's been pumping out with alarming regularity for the past few years, even though it's still sounding alright. Mariette and Katowice or Cologne and Seal Rock Hotel are some of the better/best tracks on here.
but the real problems for me are "hey you bastards I'm still here" and "you are not of my blood." those are some dull, plodding, piece of shit, if you ask me, and for chrissakes my favorite of his is the rollercoaster album. then "livingstone bramble" which is a funny joke the first time you hear it but not for very long after that.
I'd love to see him write more character songs like "don't ask about my husband," and "sometimes I can't stop" and "brothers" are two for the ages.
Perils From the Sea wipes the floor with this album, at any rate.
always loved this emoticon
