Just remembered how much I love Dilla/Madlib/MF Doom. All their stuff (which I haven't even listened to half of it) is some really formative shit for me. That's really how I learned to appreciate music.

About to listen to the Metal Fingers Special Herbs box and just lounge around while I work on this 15 page paper. Also, just listened to Doom's interview with Benji B, which was a great listen.

Just love listening to his voice man.

i missed out on the whole actual hype around MF Doom's records, but damn if the Special Herbs box isn't one of the greatest collections of music i've ever listened to.

the actual titles of these instrumentals is confusing since i think they change depending on whether you have the individual Special Herbs discs or the box set (plus the name these instrumentals went by when they were floating around years ago), but i have listened to this over a hundred times

I was too young when the hype around DOOM really began. I remember I heard him for the first time in my cousin's basement. I had my laptop with me on Thanksgiving day and I was scrolling through SOMB when I saw SonicAlligator's MF DOOM thread.

I downloaded Operation Doomsday and when I got to "Go With the Flow" it flipped my whole shit. I really didn't like hip-hop or anything up until that point and all this shit just set off a deep instantaneous infatuation. Apparently Madvillainy 2 might be released before the year ends (of course I doubt it). And there is his project with Ghostface on the way as well.

It's just overwhelming really. All this shit is too hard for me to even talk about. It's amazing to me how many people ask me if I know what Madvillainy is since I've been in college. I guess that album is just so fucking massive that it has crossed over into so many different types of music listeners because most of the time these people don't even know who Dilla is. They're just a bunch of eager indie rawkers who stumbled across the greatest underground hip-hop album of the past 15 years.

I'm pretty sure that people don't really have a positive reception to Danny Brown in here, which is sensible. I dug XXX a lot when it came out though and in some interview he gave with Pitchfork pretty early on he talked about his major influences.

Apparently he was locked up for a while and his brother would send him pages of DOOM lyrics (and all his aliases) and he just studied it for months. To be honest, I don't hear it when I'm listening to Danny Brown. He isn't half the story teller or wordsmith that DOOM is. But kind of a dope story nonetheless. He's only 42 and has built an entire world of sound that can be endlessly explored.

Listening to this Haim album everybody likes for the first time, and Kate Bush is a pretty good reference point for the first song. Cool stuff.
