Re: 2019 musical recordings
Does anyone here have an opinion on Billie Eilish. I listened to her album this afternoon. It was pretty decent. I could really do without The Office references and it's pretty gimmicky in spots, but by the standards of a teenage pop album it's quite interesting and engaging.

Re: 2019 musical recordings
How does she have 8 songs in the top 100 right now?
She had almost twice as many on the same chart two weeks ago. I counted them!

Re: 2019 musical recordings
I don't have the answer for that. How are charts even determined nowadays? It's not just purchases but also streams from Spotify and Apple Music right? I think that probably explains why a nineteen year old artist has that many songs in the Top 100.

Re: 2019 musical recordings
Makes sense. I was reading the Pitchfork review of the album and came across this:
The answer is that it's completely different. Britney and a whole host of young teenage pop stars are made into an object of male sexual desire. That's not at all the same thing and it's weird to describe that quote as "bragging about statutory rape." What the fuck is this?Still, all Eilish’s weaponry can’t stop her most overtly pop track, “bad guy,” from going stale. A snappy pulse launches Eilish into a litany of taunts against her partner. Over the rubbery electro beat, she says she’s the “make-your-girlfriend-mad type/Might-seduce-your-dad type.” It gave me pause because it suggests that perhaps Eilish isn’t so far removed from the teen pop continuum as we’ve come to believe: How different is her bragging about statutory rape, culturally, from trussing up 16-year-old Britney Spears in pigtails and plaid? Even if it’s a teen girl’s decision, entirely, to flaunt her sexuality (or engage in provocative roleplay), the line crosses a boundary plenty of adults were happy to cosign.

Re: 2019 musical recordings
i find his 2019 release Hyperion to be far weaker than 2013's Aleph, but i've been obsessed with Gesaffelstein this month and have be seduced big time by The Weeknd track:
Gessaf was my favorite set at Coachella and I think I'm gonna buy tickets for his November SF show because I wanna set it unlimited times

Can’t believe we can celebrate a new Vampire Weekend album together again.

Lol. I'm trying to listen to this right now. I'm five tracks in and... it's a lot. I never even listened to their last two albums before this but I really liked "A-Punk" when I was fourteen years old and just getting into indie rock music!

Re: 2019 musical recordings
I'm not a fan of the first two VW records, but Modern Vampires of the City is one of my favorite albums this decade. Happily cleaning the house while Father of the Bride blasts. Rostam was responsible for a lot of my favorite elements on the previous record, so I'm feeling a little trepidation about this one, but so far - 3 songs in - it's cool enough I guess.

Can't imagine the board will be receptive to this sentiment - or maybe? don't really know the musical temperature here anymore - but I'm having a great time with the Vampire Weekend record.

Re: 2019 musical recordings
The first listen did absolutely nothing for me and I found the duets to be kind of embarrassing, but I'm listening to Modern Vampires of the City right now for the first time and it's doing it for me in a big way.

Re: 2019 musical recordings
I made my initial snarky VW post without having heard the album. After 2 listens I am still incapable of appreciating the charms of their music.

Re: 2019 musical recordings
My verdict is that it certainly has its moments and may grow on me more in the future but seems like a pretty big step down from their previous albums

I had never heard of them before this album but I was reading about it recently and it caught my interest. What do you recommend from their catalog prior to this album, Soma?

Well they only have 3 albums and you may as well listen to all of them if you enjoy it but I think Capacity is their best

I would jam the fuck out of a Stokes album with strokes-y sounding strokes songs like this, and I hope they release one post haste:

Was watching some recent performance thing by them on p4k today and commented to my wife as she walked into the room, "Is there a band out there more boring than The National right now?" That's not really an indictment of them - I still like a lot of their music and listen to it regularly - but I think it's objectively true. Matt Berninger is doing the exact same thing - maybe less screaming and more frequently a major key these days - he's done since 2003; the drums are still basically just a complicated version of Jim Eno; the Dessner bros remain the most talented musicians in your high school; there's a bassist and a keyboard-y guy I'm pretty sure, too. Is that harsh? The dreary emotionalism of the music seems so much more like a bug now than a feature.
