They haven't even stopped them this time. Governor Perry can call for a special session to vote on this bill again.

Vocal oppositions have stopped or limited bills in other states. Also, some of these are struck down by courts.
Long-term it's tough because unlike other "social" issues, the country's split on abortion hasn't changed much.

Yeah, I think there's a decent chance they just give up now that it has national exposure. Also, considering Rick Perry's potential aspirations, I don't think he wants to come out of this looking like a hardline pro-lifer in a political environment where conservatives are failing nationally on social issues more & more each day.raj gibson wrote:Vocal oppositions have stopped or limited bills in other states.

Or maybe he's fucking crazy and wants nothing more than to appeal to his base in this way, damn the torpedoes. I dunno.yancy wrote:I don't think he wants to come out of this looking like a hardline pro-lifer

i think we may start seeing minor shifts in opinion here, primarily due to the "misreading of the tea leaves" on the right that have decided to vocally attack planned parenthood and abortion providers, in turn creating a vocal opposition that seems to be larger and more responsive than they may have anticipated. support for the right to an abortion appears (from my POV, at least) to be less of a behind-closed-doors issue than it used to be.
the problem w/ the opposition to overturning RvW is at the very bottom of this chart, where it's critical for the overturners and "not that important" for the opposition:

I don't see abortion going the way of legislated homophobia.
Young people are passionate about banning it forever. Their parents might die in another 30 years but by they'll all have huge families of their own that'll be firmly indoctrinated in
Meanwhile, "liberal" kids celebrate tiny victories for gay marriage with animated gifs on their tumblrs, but the steady rollback of Roe vs Wade isn't a "sexy" issue worth celebrating so they couldn't care less about it. And once they're told enough times that Obama is spying on them, they'll lose interest in politics altogether.

You don't think that the people who are opposed to abortion are the same people whoa re opposed to gay marriage? I would imagine the overlap is almost 100%.

i don't really see this, but i don't know if i come into contact w/ many young people of that opinion.
everything i'm grabbing is from here:
http://www.pewforum.org/Abortion/roe-v-wade-at-40.aspx
the % that want to overturn in the younger age bracket really isn't much different than the other groups except the 65+
there's obviously a strong tie to religion, and the lack of religious influence on many in younger generations is a big reason why i think support for the choice of an abortion may start rising.

Bro, "tiny" victories? DOMA was some evil shit. Literally a U.S. law expressing disapproval of homosexuality. This is a big day.

here's also a bunch of stuff about hispanics & religious affiliation + views on abortion, and how those change significantly when you get into 2nd & 3rd generations in the US. probably as much of an indication of where we're headed as anything as this demo grows larger & larger.

I think there's a significant number of semi-conservative, pro-choice women who at best don't give a shit about gay marriage, and at worst are actively anti-gay.Soma wrote:You don't think that the people who are opposed to abortion are the same people whoa re opposed to gay marriage? social media awareness doesn't do anything to address the issue. yeah people get cool points for making their profile picture a big equals sign, but that's a soft support. the hard support for either issue exists offline.
i still think the same groups and forces that have been advocating for safe, legal abortion for the last 35 years are still doing that. a majority of young people still support access to abortion even if the numbers aren't as high among 18-30 year olds as they are among 30-45 year olds.
it's kind of ridiculous to say that young people don't care about abortion anymore. especially for young heterosexual men, the abortion issue is much more personal than the gay marriage issue. the language of the abortion debate has also merged a bit with discussions of rape culture and patriarchy. abortion is just one facet of the "War on Women" narrative that has been going on the past few years. these are still hot button issues.

I was watching desperate housewives and it was just blowing my mind that that hot Latina chick didn't get an abortion immediately after her rich husband tampered with her pills. This clears some things up.ClosetOfExhaustion wrote:here's also a bunch of stuff about hispanics & religious affiliation + views on abortion, and how those change significantly when you get into 2nd & 3rd generations in the US. probably as much of an indication of where we're headed as anything as this demo grows larger & larger.

person on FB wrote:People may ask "Why is Gay marriage wrong?" I answer because it destroys the very idea of what marriage is, which one man and one woman for life. If traditional marriage goes then the family goes, (ironically so called gay marriage will go as well) then the decline of society. Tradition can be a very good thing, if its not broke don't fix it! BTW, because I believe in traditional marriage, I am also oppose to divorce, pre-marital sex, polygamy, "open" marriages, adultery, prostitution, Pornography as well....

I'm always smugly amused when someone with terrible opinions is also awful at writing. I'm certainly no Rhodes Scholar, but it seems like he's trying to construct an argument for the first or second time in his life, and has probably never read a book. Or at least didn't glean any language skills from said book(s).
Way more disappointed when a seemingly very intelligent person reveals himself a bigot.

My conservative facebook friends have been posting links to this "project 21" page, which is apparently an organisation for black conservatives. The project 21 facebook page features a profile pic of a conference of three white dudes, a latina looking chick, and a black lady. On this page they have been negging on a witness in the Zimmerman trial for her poor grasp of the english language. I should be doing productive school work, but the world and the internet are pissing me off so bad right now. I feel like the ghost of WP64.
Assuming this organization is little more than
at this moment, 21 motherfuckers like the very recent comment "this case should've never been brought to trial."
fuck these people.

Are black people going to riot if George Zimmerman gets a not guilty verdict from a jury of his peers?

my grandma told me last night that her bridge friends are saying that they think Zimmerman will get off and then get murdered by a mob of "blacks"
i didn't want to say that i was probably okay with that

First they'd have to take the Metra to Naperville. I feel pretty safe in my 5th floor fortress surrounded by the Poles & Latinos of Des Plaines.Nick wrote:I don't want a brick to the head.

The ACLU's point that the courts aren't enough on their own is well-taken, but this is still something you could take heart in next time you're about to give up on life because you saw a horrible headline about how Alabamastan is going to institute stop and frisk womb searches or something along those lines.

Shit like that makes it hard to legitimately dislike modern hip-hop.
