Solid picks. Ugh, fuck I so often forget that certain people suck (Page, Brown… probably Iggy and Bowie too).

Statutory rape (even in the 70s while on all the coke) - not rad. But a Steven Tyler who basically doubles down on it in 202X gets less sympathy from me than a Bowie. I guess this is a roundabout way for me to say, 1. I don’t know who actually belongs on this list, 2. I’m probably not qualified to make that determination, and 3. The world has been really really bad for a really long time, as this conversation even existing is all the modern day “comeuppance” certain stars will ever get for acts that used to be perfectly normal (whoever wrote the “fuck her brains out” line in Animal House probably did so while thinking, “who hasn’t fucked a bunch of 14 year olds?)

Very little has changed since this was posted nearly 2 months ago. "Vampire" fell off hard after one week. I'm not seeing any Lil Uzi Vert songs from that album anywhere on the chart. This could be the dullest year in recent memory for "popular" music?

Little Neddy goes to war wrote:Looks like the kids are vibing with quite a bit of pop country and/or insurrection culture war country these days.

"Kids" don't buy mp3s on iTunes, which is what got both of those songs to #1.

Ragged Old Flag by Johnny Cash and Hippie Boy by the Flying Burrito Brothers are two songs that deserve to be exploded at Comiskey Park and if, on my death bed, I had the choice of hearing one of them, I would much rather never hear them again and probably also recover and stop dying, but the point is that they suck.

The only edits that I can see, happen when they show different camera angles. It sounds like you can hear some kid say the same thing twice. I imagine someone is just blowing the horn but because it’s in that giant warehouse it’s ringing around the acoustics of the building, similar to an old church.

I got a girl who lives with me
I got a girl, she smells so sweetly
I got a girl, she loves her dog
I got a girl, I love her dog too
I got a girl who stares in the mirror
I got a girl who blames it on her period
I got a girl, she is so right
I got a girl, she's my guiding light
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
I got a girl who loves good soul
I got a girl who dances to disco
I got a girl who wears cool shoes
I got a girl who wears them in the nude
I got a girl who speaks her mind
    I got a girl, she'll argue anytime
I got a girl, she is so small
I got a girl, she'll knock down any wall
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
    Get a load of this
She's always bitching at me when I'm feeling down
Asking questions with her little frown
I can't take much much more of this
    I'm out, I'm out, I'm out, I'm out, I'm
    Get a load of this
She's always bitching at me when I'm feeling down
Asking questions with her little frown
I can't take much much more of this
I'm out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out
I got a girl I love to kiss
I got a girl I never want to miss
I got a girl who's my best friend
I got a girl that won't even hold my hand
I got a girl that makes me laugh
I got a girl, I'll make her laugh too
I got a girl, she has girlfriends
I got a girl, I like her girlfriends
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need (I need)
And I feel we're going higher and higher
Well I know what I need
And I feel we're going higher and higher
    I got a girl
    I got a girl
    I got a girl
    And she's got a guy

Is the ending of this song supposed to be some kind of a "twist"?*

Or is he just literally saying that he has a girl, she has a guy (and that guy is him)? And there is no "twist" whatsoever in the song?

*If this seems like a ridiculous question, I have this feeling like a lot of songs in the 90s did this sort of thing but I also couldn't name them so maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I love that tripping Daisy song and this is the very first time my brain has been introduced to the idea that this was a twist ending and I’m a little shook.

Honestly, my gut says he just meant that he, the singer, is the guy. Just based on delivery. But then I consider a lyric like “that won’t even hold my hand” and I’m like imlikewhoa

It's so weird that I was allowed to grow up in this weird little bubble of time where corporate elites were just throwing money at cool artists and just throwing everything at the wall just to see what sticks.

Half a decade later they were all just like "fuck it, we're going with Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace and this is just how it's going to be."

Really don't want to get too nostalgic in ways that blot out what was really shitty about the mid 90s but the baseline of what was "normal" in music was way more diverse and eclectic than anything that was to come.

Hope you enjoyed my Saturday morning Thought Dump

Did the public consistently need new sounds? Did artists need new sounds? Why did pop music go through a progression in the first place? Is it just because every generation has to have their own thing? Who decides and when is the cutoff? Was it all organic or were there forces at work??

Do we even get new sounds anymore?

I feel like pop/rock stopped evolving like 15 years ago and that's being super generous to it.

I'm probably parroting an opinion that gradually forms in the brain of everyone when they get to a certain age. Not necessarily people who lived in the middle ages but certainly everyone after WWII, I guess.

What even are these boxes / what are they for?

Are they like synthesizers that you have to plug your own (MIDI?) keyboard and into?

They are like effects pedals but meant for studios. Typically they are better at doing whatever the effects pedal might do, delay, reverb, etc. Downside is they cost way more and you need a rack to use multiple effects, as stacking them on top of each other is a quick way to burn them out.

    https://www.stereogum.com/2174614/the-number-ones-silks-freak-me/columns/the-number-ones/

When I was in high school, dances were pretty much freakfests. It would just be kids grinding their junk into each other. Sometimes, it would be entire lines of 10 or 15 kids, all grinding their junk into the ass of whoever was standing in front of them, simulating some kind of unthinkable human-centipede group-sex situation. These kids didn’t move their feet, and they barely moved their hands. It was all just junk grinding on junk. Teachers and chaperones would passive-aggressively complain, but nobody ever stopped the kids. For a vast chunk of the ’90s, this was simply how kids danced. At least in my high school, we called it freaking, and those lines of kids were called freak lines.

    Is this true?

I only went to one dance through all of middle and high school.
