Read about these dudes in the Reader this morning. This album is a Sound collage featuring Chicago as its backdrop. Gospel, jazz, r&b, blues, and hip hop history are folded into a collage that reminds me of No-ID productions. Recommended for residents of Chicago or fans of soul jazz/spiritual jazz hip hop production. Tracks like Mamas Land and Fall Dead wouldn’t sound out of place of recent flying lotus, Thundercat, or Makaya Mcraven albums.

Interesting timing for me, which will be clear in an upcoming post. Def something I should look into.

I still can't believe this album ever got released. King Night was a full ten years ago. I always weirdly liked that album even though I find the 'witch house' aesthetic to be off-putting. I really respect the whole trajectory of this band. With the Internet and social media, it is very difficult for artists to really build a kind of aura about them. I always remember Simon Critchley's comments about being a teenager listening to Bowie. Every couple of years he would just re-emerge with this entirely new persona and aesthetic. That sort of engagement with a recording artist is basically impossible to replicate in our contemporary world.

I remember when Salem started touring and they had those absolutely disastrous live sets, which is funny as shit. I feel like they had an outsized impact on the trajectory of hip-hop and rap music over the last decade even though their influence probably doesn't really get credited a lot. This new album is surprisingly good (with the exception of the first track).

I was digging the new Pumpkins, and the cartoons, and then I read a pitchfork review today and it ruined it all for me. The cartoons are still cool, but the album flaws are now too pronounced for me to enjoy it as much. Ignorance was bliss.

I liked this a lot until the rap part kicked in. That girl has some really amazing dance moves and it's a cool song....

Not gonna be popular here but I have always hated the mixture of rap/pop and the little "rap in the middle" of pop songs. I hope that style goes away and never comes back.

That fucking album cover made me laugh my ass off this morning. Then I read the linked Soundgarden Rolling Stone article where Kim Thayil basically tells Corgan to fuck off with his complaining and thrift store mysticism which also made me laugh hard. Guy is great for comedy of a certain type.

Don't let anyone tell you that you shouldn't enjoy what you like. Even before you'd heard a single second of the new album, did you really think that pitchforkmedia.com was going to give a glowing review to a Smashing Pumpkins album in 2020?

Bill Callahan and Will Oldham have been putting out these collaborations with other Drag City artists over the past months.   I haven't been super into most of it, but this Bonnie sung, Dead Rider played Smog cover is godly.

I'm glad pitchforkmedia told me that Róisín Murphy's album was one of the best things of the year. I knew nothing about her, but I'm enjoying Róisín Machine a whole lot.

    Like, this is great right?

The new Exploding Star Orchestra album is great. It features Damon Locks heavily which is a good thing in my opinion.
