Got my first speeding ticket with “Jump” playing at such a loud volume I didn’t hear or notice the cop flashing his lights and hitting his siren.

I guess that his thousands of hours of amazing ideas and riffs will never see the light of day now. LOL. Personally, I'll never forgive Eddie for what he said about Michael Anthony. But, at the end of the day he seemed like the prototypical drunk maniac: when he was sober, he was an awesome guy. When we was wasted: he said some really stupid shit.
Nerf Herder did the Buffy theme so they're A-ok in my book.
Eddie was a god and I'm sad he's gone. I drank a lot of cheap beer in shitty pensacola parking lots while blasting Van Halen's first two records back in the flight school days, and I'm a better man for it.

Re: Dead Thread
I like Van Halen and I’m pretty sure Nerf Herder do as well.
I have no stories about this band. They were already rock gods by the time I was conscious of their music. Like most bands I think they were great on their early albums when they were young and sucked as they got older and specifically after David Lee Roth. I’ve never worshipped EVHs guitar playing. I respect it from afar and I believe he kinda changed soloing in rock throughout the 80s, at least in pop rock. But his style is a bit too western classical for me, although that doesn’t mean he didn’t skronk sometimes. His solo in Beat It is pretty skronky. But Eruption is a perfect example of what I’m talking about with the western classical. This guy was trying to be Wagner or some shit. It’s interesting that his inability to read music, which is respectable, was a feature because when you think about it he’s the farthest away from feeling the music that you can get. He totally wanted to impress dudes who could read music and best them. Compare him with a similarly classical leaning master, Robert Fripp, whose solos sear from the inside out. I think you feel Fripp whereas you may be dazzled by Van Halen.
When all is said and done I like most of their singles during the David Lee Roth period. Right Now Sucks.

No question. Saw him too many times to count live.
I am just poking fun at him talking (to anyone who would listen for decades) about how much great music he has and we are left with VHIII and retread from the 70s.

I like this analysis. I taught Van Halen for a long time and I can't argue against it. Another interesting thing, when you dig in: is that he uses the SUS4 over/over/over. And, much of the music is just simple in nature. By contrast, I find Randy Rhoades to be much more sophisticated (Eddie will play the middle two strings in a "4 chord" or "inverted 5 chord" like deep purple; while Randy will use m7 chords). Eddie solos are impossible for me to actually play like him, but they are simple in construct: almost always very simple 5 note scales. Randy will use full diatonic scales with advanced mode flavorings.
I think that Eddie should be revered not as a composer, but as an innovator. He was 1000% style, and very little substance: as you point out. And, as I point out: he always talked about how much material he had, and what a voluminous composer he was, when really VHII was a toss off, Diver Down was a toss off: hell, even side B of 1984 was retreads of old stuff. So, yeah, he was great, and I loved him and the band: but he was also delusional and his output of truly great stuff is not very prolific upon honest analysis.
Where Eddie stands out is his ear. He mastered ALL of Cream by ear in a short amount of time in the early 70s. Did you know that he was a piano virtuoso when he was a kid? He played all that by ear and won a big competition 2 x's as a kid. So, Eddie's big gift, besides dexterity, is, like Bob Dylan: his ability to hear the music and play it instantly, regardless of complexity.

I've seen Naked Raygun more times than any other real band, not counting my friends playing in bars.

My friend and the drummer for Keji Al Feju, piss piss piss moan moan moan, and Running, Alejandro Morales died unexpectedly while visiting family on Sunday. Cause is not certain at this time but if you feel like you want to pay respect there is a mural/tribute that was put up near the Empty Bottle. I’m so heartbroken over this guys. Alex was the nicest person you would ever meet. A true lover of all things weird. Rest easy friend, never got to tell you how much I loved you.

The Humpty Dance might be the first rap song I learned the lyrics to, and it still never fails to get crowd approval at a karaoke bar.

Re: Dead Thread
Nothing against your post NB but this guy was way more than the gimmick that got him famous. Trech from naughty by nature and 2pac were discovered through Digital Underground. Just listen to the follow up song to the humpty dance, no nose job:
If youve never heard the album that this song comes from, ‘Sons of the P’ you might be surprised. It’s basically ‘to pimp a butterfly’ in essence. Production sound like the 90s with a heavy dose of p-funk but the overall tone is be black, be proud, and be liberated. For a portion.... there’s also some raunchy shit and this solid Little Rock jam:
Don’t forget, he also put the satin on ya panties:
Take the train:
RIP SHOCK

Sorta considered adding a second comment to my post, but assumed somebody with more to say on the subject would do so. Thanks Bgwaves.
Obviously dude was much more than a goofy gimmick, but I cherish that gimmick so yeah.
