does anyone remember when I started a "what's the deal with diabetes" thread on the old lopp?

that wasn't actually the thread title, I won't say what I think it probably was. I wish I could say this was like ten+ years ago but it was probably like 6 max

Thinking about starting a "I don't understand claustrophobia" thread, good idea or not?

    I say go for it.

One of my favorite movie memories about not understanding claustrophobia came from the 1990 Ninja Turtles movie. One of the Turtles, I think it was Michelangelo, accused Casey Jones of being claustrophobic. Jones, having a severely limited vocabulary and acute homophobia got angry, thinking that he had just been called gay.

No, but it's a question I've really been grappling with throughout my 11 year marriage to a Type I diabetic.

Needless to say, I have made a lot of painful self-educational progress (finally!) over the course of the last six weeks.

I don’t know if it was claustrophobia but when we went to New York over the summer we just happened to make our downtown day the same day as international pride day. When we got on the subway from New Jersey to NYC the train was so packed you couldn’t move. I kept freaking out about the idea that we may be stopped in a train with all these people in a tiny tube under a river. We made it fine but I didn’t not want to take the subway the rest of the day. An Elaine moment if you will.

When I was 18 I saw Alkaline Trio at the Aragon and the crowd was so packed near the front row that the crowd moved as one giant mass. If you didn’t move with the crowd and keep your balance you’d have fallen and gotten trampled. Had to help several people back to there feet over the night.

I may have been at that Alkaline Trio show because I definitely had the same experience seeing them at the Aragon. Never dealt with anything quite like it before or since.

I do get minor claustrophobia. I was at Wrigley Field when the Cubs won the World Series and the crowd control got pretty insane on Addison. We were all pinned together at one point and I was starting to feel my chest literally compress against the people around me. It definitely makes me panicky... and with good reason. The footage of the Hillsborough disaster is nightmarish.

My first ever concert was seeing The Jesus Lizard at P4K fest. Everyone on SOMB told me to go see them over Yo La Tengo so I waited in like the fifth row of people with my other 14-year-old friend. The first thing that David Yow did when he took the stage was jump into the crowd literally on top of us. My friend fell to the ground on top of like several other people who were all screaming that they couldn't breath. I made it through probably four or five songs in that set before I had to move way to the back. I probably weighed literally like 120 lbs back then. Shit fucked me up real bad.

On the other hand, it's possible you might never even see someone stage diving at a show ever again, but here you have a story where you got to experience it at its rawest.

I don't mean that in a you're going to die/society is about to crumble kind of way.

I just meant that kids don't think it's cool now and it's pretty much banned everywhere.

LOL how the hell did I think it was Mike? Donatello makes so much more sense.
