Re: 2014 Musical Recordings
Benji is maybe one of the saddest albums I can remember listening to.
Having taken it in a couple times now I am surprised by the 9.2 on P4K. Not because this isn't a really album but because I could see their audience getting this and sending mass hate mail.

Yeah. It's maybe the biggest bummer in all of mark kozelek's catalog and that is fucking saying something. What's most remarkable is that it pulls that feat off without being opportunistic or exploitative. As a piece of writing it's pretty remarkable in that way, warts and all. I'm liking it more with every listen, which is often the case with his records.
The pitchfork review seemed pretty earnest in its appreciation for this record, which is nice to see -- but yeah it's not your typical pitchfork fare.

Re: 2014 Musical Recordings
yeah, waiting on my special edition to arrive before I spin that one again
but I daresay it's the better of the two nakedly confessional / tru life singer-songwriter albums that my favorite artists have released in 2014.

I'm really bummed that I can't get a pressing of Hazyville without spending $120 for a crazy deluxe copy that includes Ghettoville and a bunch of booklets. I'm sure its an impressive package but I don't have that type of liquid capital on hand.

Re: 2014 Musical Recordings
I thought the same thing recently. would love to have Hazyville because it's my favorite of his by a shout, and while I like ghettoville a lot I'm not ready to drop half the car insurance payment on that whole fucking box.
I did just buy this though: http://www.dragcity.com/products/voices-in-a-rented-room
free shipping, even.

Listened to ††† today and thought it was not very good. Never much cared for Deftones either.

Re: 2014 Musical Recordings
I don't have a favorite. Ghettoville kicks ass and is some of the densest shit. Only Actress release that I don't like is R.I.P. I think that is an unpopular opinion or something but getting through that album is a task for me.chicken invaders wrote:I thought the same thing recently. would love to have Hazyville because it's my favorite of his by a shout

Nick, if there was a schedule conflict and you could only see Death Grips or Sun Kill Moon, which would it be? There is a right answer to that question.

i ask this earnestly: do you think Flockaveli is more sincere than any Sun Kil Moon album?
turns out Koz (listed as a solo gig) is playing in San Francisco for the Noise Pop festival on my birthday

I like this song, even if it doesn't really sound like the Afghan Whigs all that much.

Re: 2014 Musical Recordings
I saw Julianna Barwick last night and as expected it was awful shit. Boring 3-4 chord per song, cheesy new age vocals, and boring simple piano that her voice just followed. I also believe she uses a vocal harmonizer. Just awful. Looping you're voice to sing pretty bullshit is about the lamest way to make music.

I've given her catalog a listen and was not very impressed, but held back from saying it as I thought maybe I was just growing away from a lot of the indie ambient stuff anyhow. Happy to hear someone who shared similar taste with me agrees. A generic and sad listen.
As a related confession, all I get excited about is waiting for the next stars of the lid/winged victory/related releases, and hunting down random new age albums from days long since dead. That keeps me satisfied.
